Rubrics Explained

Thanks to HTH students Lila, Ray, Patty, and Sean, we have a fun way to explain what rubrics are and role they play in a performance-based system.

P3T Process

This is an example of using the P3T tool process as we figured out what "Advisory" means. Once we have a common understanding (a statement), we can then begin to set goals and look at data to measure if we are meeting our goals.

Thank you, Mark Standley!

HTH stakeholders (students, parents, business partners, board) are sad to see our principal, Mark Standley, resign. He will be doing many things, including running a new, non-profit, "Educating for Leadership" that is specifically set up to support HTH student activities.

Thank you for all you've done for our school and culture! We will think of you as we take 'the High Land". You have impacted all our lives to make us better people.

HTH Graduation 2009

Congratulations to all the HTH seniors who made it through graduation:
May 20, 2009
Performing Arts Center, Anchorage, Alaska

2008/2009 HTH Graduates

Robert Armbrust
Robert has been at Highland Tech High since its beginning six years ago. While attending HTH, Robert was a core member of the robotics team and was involved with the Alaska Linux Users Group. Outside of school, he is a member of the Anchorage Racing Lion’s Motocross Club and enjoys alpine skiing. Robert will be attending UAA in the Fall, pursuing a degree in computer networking.

Ryan Bacigalupo
Ryan’s years at Highland Tech have influenced and developed his character over time since the third year after the school was established. Senior year has been the hardest but most joyful out of them all, and most certainly will not be forgotten. He dedicates his graduation to those he cares for and to those who helped him along the way.

Holly Beu
Holly began her journey with Highland Tech High as a seventh grader. Her perseverance has given her the ability to overcome several obstacles during her school career. Holly inspires everyone around her with her wonderful smile and attitude. An additional spotlight for Holly this year was wearing the crown as Prom Queen.

Amanda Corbeil (Cum Laude)
Amanda is one the original students from when the doors at HTH first opened. She was a brand new seventh grader. Generally a very quiet person, Amanda can become obnoxiously talkative once you get to know her. This senior year has been the best year of her life so far, thanks to the people who have been her support system: family, friends, and teachers.

Timothy Coulter
Timothy is another of the original seventh graders who helped open HTH. He has never regretted it. His best years of his life have been at HTH, where he learned many things, and met many new friends. He is a little sad to see it end. In the future, when someone asks about the best time of his life, his answer will always lead to his years as a student at Highland Tech High.

Cayley Eller (Graduating one year early)
Cayley has a passion to help. She uses her personal and social skills to encourage others as well as herself. Cayley is happy, easily excited and recognizes strengths in everyone. She has achieved her goal of graduating early this year and looks forward to continuing her education and eventually a career in Physical Therapy.

Jonathan Graves
Jonathan saw a real change take place from attending Highland Tech High. When you’re a kid just coming out of elementary school, you aren’t thinking about the future and the steps you need to take to get there. All he cared about was how to get most of his homework done in class and do the least amount of work possible. This school opened his eyes to the possibilities for his future. Looking back at the 12 years he spent to get his diploma, it finally all made sense; the years he spent working all of those years has filled him with a sense of accomplishment. Now that he is over that mountain and gazes upon the next, he is thankful for the experience and knowledge that HTH has given to better prepare him for the world that awaits outside its doors.

Kayla Haffner (Cum Laude) (Graduating one year early)
Kayla is a traditional junior graduating a year early due to hard work and dedication to her curiosity in school. Standing at 5’3” she looks up to a bright future in the field of medicine and oncology, and plans to major in Biology before reaching for her Ph.D. But she’s not all work and no play; sports are a huge part of her life. She has participated in several different sports and also has a passion for writing.

Ian Hanna
Ian has been going to Highland Tech High since it opened. Everybody knows him as the man with the smile; whenever you see him, it shows. He’s never afraid to push the limits a little and see how far he can take himself.

David Kerlin (December 2008 Graduate)
David is a hard working and motivated person. He succeeded in his goal of finishing high school early in December. David is a go-getter to the fullest and his drive to do his best will always be remembered.

Keegan Kilgore (Magna Cum Laude)Valedictorian
Keegan is a school-wide sensation. In his four years at Highland Tech High, he has demonstrated his ability to lead his peers as a positive role model. He has participated in organizations like Student Leadership, Robotics, Re-Inventing Schools Coalition (RISC), and Highland Tech High’s school store. Cleverness and ambition are just a couple of his many qualities. Keegan plans to continue his education at Annapolis Naval Academy.

Rachel McKenna Salutatorian
Rachel has been in Highland Tech High since the day the school opened. She specializes in science, and dreams of one day learning to search for dinosaurs in the field of paleontology. She is outgoing, willful, and prepared to learn any skill necessary to succeed. She hopes to move on to follow her dreams, wherever they may lead her.

Raven Mills
Raven has been attending Highland Tech High for the past three years, and they have been interesting, to say the least. He joined the robotics team in his second year, and learned to work with an animating program called Autodesk, submitting an animation that was created for competition. He has made many friends, and plans to continue to do so in college at Scotland.

Thomas Morse
Thomas will be going to Europe on a quest to see new places and meet cool people. After that, well, he will just leave that for then. Cheers!

Nathan Neas
Nathan has been on the HTH Robotics team, learning programming and being part of a team that will know each other as friends for years to come. Working as an intern with the Alaska State Department of Labor, Nathan continues to hone his skills in technology, programming, and plans to attend UAA in the fall.

James O’Farrell (December 2008 Graduate)
James joined Highland Tech High the second year they were opened. James quickly developed many friendships due to his easy going and friendly nature. He has participated in organizations like Student Leadership, CORE court, and fund raising events.

Corynne O’Farrell
Corynne started with Highland Tech High the very first year. It was also her first year in Anchorage, having moved here with her family from Calgary, Alberta. Corynne has developed strong friendships here in Alaska that she will miss as she continues her education back in Canada. Corynne is known for her love of animals and has inspired others toward vegetarianism.

Jenna Roosdett
As a seventh grader, starting out at a new school is rough but necessary. Only after realizing that Highland Tech High was the best route for Jenna, did she really get excited about her future. She excelled quickly through Reading, PSS, and Math to focus on the more challenging subjects and extracurricular activities (Leadership, Yearbook, and designing this year’s Senior Hoodies). Without HTH, there would be certain characteristics missing from Jenna’s personality. Jenna thanks every person responsible for shaping her memories of Highland over the past six years; family, teachers, friends, and even enemies. She will take her experiences onward toward greater things: college at the Art Institute of Seattle and a career in Graphic Design. - Final Generation, ftw!

Kyle Searcy
Kyle is one of the original students of Highland Tech High. Throughout the six years under its mantle, he learned from the assistance of others and his creative imagination. Kyle improved both mentally and socially and is appreciative of everything he learned and experienced while attending Highland. He enjoyed working with his family and friends and pushing his teachers to the brink of insanity.

Ashley Shipley (December 2008 Graduate)
Ashley has been going to Highland Tech High since it started six years ago. Within those years she has matured dramatically, and has become more dedicated to accomplishing her goals. Throughout the years she has become more dedicated to accomplishing her goals. Highland has helped her to focus on the important goals in life. In the middle of her junior year she volunteered to do a video on FAS/FASD for Anchorage School District’s STEP Center. She plans to attend UAA for a year and then move to Arizona and enroll at NAU for dental hygiene.

Mason Smales
Mason has gone to Highland Tech High from the year the school started in 2003, beginning with seventh grade. He really enjoys learning, and Highland has allowed him to not only learn at his own pace, but has also encouraged him to excel. The teachers and mentors at Highland have helped him to become someone who is comfortable in a leadership position, which has proved useful in many areas of his life.

Brenden Turney
Brenden Turney is an Alaskan and a dedicated adventurer. He would rather spend his time backpacking in the mountains or at the beach surfing the swells, but is nonetheless proud of the several years he spent as a student at Highland Tech High. He will attend UAA this fall to work on a degree in engineering.

Robotics team 1548 progress

Look at the team's progress:

4 day's before the due date, and we're rockin! Although we did do a good job, it was Friday the 13th, apparently, there's no bad luck that day, because of how well we did.

3 days before the due date and we are still going strong, we'll probably have the robot done on time.......

Monday......... Tomorrow's the deadline....... What a rush, luckily, we finished the robot with flying colors!!! It looks great and runs fantastically. Although, what the robot looks like when it's finished is a surprise, so it's not in there! Tomorrow we will ship the robot and on March 24 and 11:30 pm, we will all go to Las Vegas for the robotics tournament. That is when we will compete with our robot instead of just running it up and down the halls of our school. The robot will work great, and only the best wishes for the team!
